Do I need an asbestos management plan?

When it comes to asbestos there are many people responsible for ensuring the health and safety of people on-site is managed correctly. Commercial property owners are the next group of people responsible that we take a look at.

The Health & Safety regulations state that “a PCBU with management or control of a workplace who knows or ought reasonably to know that there is a risk of exposure to respirable asbestos fibres in the workplace must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that all asbestos or ACM giving rise to the risk at the workplace is identified.”

Therefore, for any commercial property that is leased where the age of the building is prior to 2000, you are required by legislation to identify and manage asbestos. Failing to comply with current regulations is an offence and is liable for conviction. An individual will receive a fine no more than $10,000 and for any other person, a fine not exceeding $50,000.
